BREVARD - The Tornados split in their two games this week, moving them to 3-3 on the year ... On Thursday night, the Tornados picked up their second home win of the season and their first overtime win, defeating Milligan College 79-72 in overtime ... Brevard had three players in double-figures, led by 25 points from senior Holly Krogman and 15 points from Samantha Winn ... Krogman was 8-of-9 from the free throw line, including hitting 5-of-5 down the stretch in the overtime period ... Senior Courtney Brandon added 14 points for the game ... On Saturday, in their SAC opener, the Tornados shot only 38.1 percent from the floor, while the visiting Lady Pioneers came out on fire, shooting 58.9 percent, including going 15-of-27 from behind the three-point line ... Senior Holly Krogman again led the Tornados in scoring, as she had 18 points and five rebounds for the game ... Krogman has scored in double-digits every game this season ... Sophomore Samantha Winn had 13 points, but it wasn't enough as BC fell to Tusculum, 81-52 ... The loss was the first home loss of the season for the Tornados ... Brevard College hits the road on Thursday, as they travel to Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. for a 6 p.m. tip-off start time in a non-conference match up ... The Tornados return home to host their fourth home game of the season, as Limestone College pays a visit to Brevard, N.C. for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
CARSON-NEWMAN - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles defeated Lees-McRae 73-70 for their first win of the 2007-2008 season. The Lady Eagles put together a 12-2 run to take a six-point lead with just under nine minutes to play in the first half … The Lady Bobcats would tie things up at 14; however, C-N would again gain momentum, extending their lead to as much as ten before cruising into halftime with a comfortable nine point edge, 38-29. Lees-McRae would challenge for the lead again with just under seven minutes to play and the score at 60-57, only to watch the Lady Eagles compile an 11-4 run to take a ten-point lead at 71-61 with 2:42 on the clock … Tashea Ledbetter went four-for-five from the field and drained all six attempts from the charity stripe for 14 points to lead Carson-Newman. Shari Buford picked up 10 points while Angela Volentine, Ashley Kyle, and Ashley Tipton all registered nine points ... Against LMU, the Lady Eagles earned their first conference win of the season in a 72-59 victory over Lincoln Memorial University. Free throw shooting proved to be one of the key factors in the win for Carson-Newman. The Lady Eagles made 37 trips to the line on Saturday night, knocking down 30-37 for 81.1 percent from the free throw line. Carson-Newman put three players in double-figures with Ashley Kyle leading the way with 18 points. Emily Mason and Tashea Ledbetter added 16 and 10 points, respectively.
CATAWBA - The Catawba Lady Indians moved their winning streak to four games with wins over Pfeiffer and Livingstone last week ... NeKeithia Howard posted 17 points and eight rebounds in the 78-64 win over Pfeiffer ... The Lady Indians pulled away from a tied game at the half to post the win ... Catawba shot 48 percent in the win and held a 51-40 ede on the boards ... Cristi Bartlett added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Kisha Long tossed in a dozen points ... Catawba survived its game at Livinstone despite making only three field goals in the second half in the 57-49 victory ... Howard collected her third double-double of the year with 13 points and a dozen rebounds ... Nisha Long tallied 11 points, while Bartlett pulled down 11 boards ... While shooting just 12 percent from the field in the second half and 25 percent (15-of-60) for the game, Catawba managed to take advantage of its opportunities at the line where it canned 22-of-32 ... The Lady Indians held Livingstone to 31 percent shooting and helped force 26 turnovers ... Howard is averaging a double-double after five games, scoring at a 16 point clip and adding 10.2 rebounds ... Sicilia LoSauro is hitting for 10.6 points a contest, making 11-of-28 from long range ... Catawba opens SAC play at Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday and travels to West Virginia this weekend for a tournament at Bluefield State.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne College women's basketball team did not play last week and will Queens on Monday in its home opener beginning at 6 p.m. … Lenoir-Rhyne is 4-0 on the year and is off to its best start since the 2004-05 campaign (6-0) … Queens leads the all-time series with Lenoir-Rhyne, 8-5, and the two teams haven't met since the 2003-04 … Lenoir-Rhyne also opens South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday when it hosts long-time rival, Catawba, beginning at 6 p.m. … The series between the two schools is tied at 29 but the Indians won both games last year.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - The Lady Eagles of Carson-Newman College entered the Tex Turner Arena on Saturday evening and handed the Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team its first conference loss of the season in a 72-59 decision ... The Lady Railsplitters, now 2-3 on the year, never led in the contest and trailed by as many as 23 points on two different occasions. LMU's low shooting percentage from the field and behind the arc contributed to the Lady Railsplitter's first conference loss of the season ... Free throw shooting proved to be one of the key factors in the win for Carson-Newman. The Lady Eagles made 37 trips to the line on Saturday night, knocking down 30-37 for 81.1 percent from the free throw line. The Lady Railsplitters hit 73.3 percent from the line but only managed to get fifteen attempts at the line, hitting 11 of those ... Carson-Newman put three players in double-figures with Ashley Kyle leading the way with 18 points. Emily Mason and TaShea Ledbetter added 16 and 10 points respectively ... Only two Lady Railsplitter players scored double figures on Saturday. Sophomore Andi Winney finished the night with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while senior point-guard Shawna Nicols contributed 15 points and three assists ... Now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the South Atlantic Conference, the Lady Railsplitters will now prepare for North Greenville University on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Tex Turner Arena..
MARS HILL - MHC played only one game last week. The Lions are now 3-1 on the season … The Lions defeated Limestone College 66-55 Tuesday night in Stanford Arena. Ariel Okunowo (Decatur, GA) hit a 3-pointer with 17:08 left in the opening period and the Lions led the remainder of the contest. MHC went on to take a 15-point lead into the locker room at the intermission behind solid play by Okunowo and Jessica Blanford (Concord, NC) … Okunowo and Blanford scored 10 and eight points in the half, respectively, to account for half of the Lions points in the frame … The Lions took their largest lead in the contest of 18 points (58-40) at the 6:44 mark when Allison Schafer (Advance, NC) hit a shot in the lane. Limestone then went on a 17-6 run to trim the deficit to just seven points (62-55) with 2:56 left in regulation after Monica Adams hit a pair of free throws … That was as close as the Saints could get. MHC quickly extended their advantage to 11 points after a successful trips to the foul line by Schafer, Okunowo and Shamia Terry (Greenville, SC) … Blanford led the Lions with 16 points and six rebounds while Okunowo added 13 points and also tallied six boards. Schafer rounded out the double-digit scorers for MHC with 10 points. Shannon Lee (Four Oaks, NC) led the Lions in rebounding with nine … Monica Adams led Limestone with 17 rebounds and 10 points. Essence Greer followed with 15 points and four rebounds. Limestone struggled shooting the ball as they converted on only 29.2 percent (21-72) of their field goal attempts. The teams combined for 53 turnovers in the contest. MHC edged Limestone in rebounding, 46-44 … MHC will return to action on December 8 when they host North Greenville University. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Stanford Arena.
NEWBERRY - The Newberry College Lady Indians followed up the disappointing loss to Augusta State with a 3-0 week, including a 2-0 record at the Newberry Classic… The Lady Indians are now 5-1 on the season… On Tuesday night, the team came out on the positive end of a see-saw game at Coker, winning 84-70… The Lady Indians led by 19 points just two minutes into the second half, yet found themselves trailing by two at the 7:20 mark… However, Newberry was able to turn it on late and lead by as many as 17 en route to the victory… Tonique Frasier shot 12-of-16 from the floor to lead all scorers with 26 points, as well as recording eight rebounds… Laura Marquardt scored 12, while Tacarra Harris netted 11… The Lady Indians held a distinct advantage inside, outscoring the Cobras 54-20 in the paint… The Newberry Classic began Friday with a 75-57 win over Morris College… The Lady Indians never trailed in the game, and 12 of the 13 players that saw action scored with the starters seeing limited playing time… Freshman Briana Johnson led the team with 12 points, while Frasier had 11 and Carnicha Bellinger had 10… The weekend wrapped up with a 90-45 thrashing of provisional Division II member Flagler College… Frasier once again had a monster performance, netting 19 points in only 22 minutes on the floor… Sade Coates had 15 points and Bellinger netted 13… The Lady Indians shot a blistering 64.3% from the floor (36-of-56) to round out the 3-0 week… The Lady Indians jump right in to South Atlantic Conference play with one of their biggest rivals over the past few years, as Newberry travels to Wingate for a 6 p.m. battle on Wednesday night… Newberry resumes non-league play with a 2 p.m. home game against Allen University on Saturday.
TUSCULUM - The Tusculum women's basketball team defeated Brevard 81-52 in the Pioneers only game of the week … TC had 15 three-pointers as a team, all coming from two players… Ashli Oliver poured in eight 3-pointers, while Nikki Van Dine added seven, all coming in the first half… Van Dine's 21 points marked a career-high while Oliver finished with 26 points… Stephany Neptune went 9-for-10 on the floor and finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds… Freshmen Jasmine Gunn and Jasmine Parker led the Pioneers with nine and seven assists, respectively… Neptune has blocked a shot in nine straight games, dating back to her rookie season (2005-06)… Oliver has tallied a three-pointer in 18 straight games… In fact, of her 63 career outings, only six have been without a 3-pointer… TC has blocked a shot in 20 straight games… Since 2005, the Pioneers are 30-6 when scoring at least 70 points… Tusculum will travel to Lees-McRae Monday followed by a home game Thursday against King College… The Pioneers will close out the week with an away game Saturday at Southern Indiana.
WINGATE - The Wingate University women's basketball team played one game last week. On Tuesday night, Nov. 27, Francis Marion University hit 10 three-point field goals en route to a 112-81 NCAA Division II victory over Wingate in the Smith University Center on the FMU campus. The Patriots hit 10-of-19 triples on the evening (52.6 percent) ... Wingate placed four players in double figures, with two student-athletes earning double-doubles. Bulldog junior point guard Anna Atkinson notched 22 points and 12 assists. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® candidate added five rebounds and four steals in her 33 minutes. Atkinson hit 12-of-17 free throws on the evening. For her career, Atkinson has four double-doubles (two in 2006-07 and two in 2007-08) ... Bulldog sophomore center Erica Crumlin had 15 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double (points, rebounds) of her young career. Freshman guard CC Brooks and sophomore center Stacie Rhodes chipped in 10 points each for the visitors ... Wingate took advantage of a cold-shooting start by the Patriots and led 21-9 as FMU misfired on 12 of its first 15 shots. The Bulldog advantage was nine points (30-21) following two free throws by Atkinson with 7:27 left in the opening half. Francis Marion outscored the Bulldogs 26-13 over the final seven minutes to grab a 47-43 halftime lead ... Wingate and Francis Marion tallied 36 points each on fast break points. The two teams scored 44 points each in the paint. The Patriots converted 32 Bulldog turnovers into 40 points, while Wingate capitalized on 26 FMU turnovers to score 27 points ... Atkinson leads the Bulldogs with her 18.3 points per game average. She is very close to averaging a double-double, as the McDowell High School product is dishing out a team-best 9.3 assists per game. Atkinson also contributes 5.2 rebounds per game ... Bulldog senior guard Kate Edwards is hitting 10.2 points per game. Crumlin is averaging 9.8 points per game. She grabs a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game. All total, Wingate has six players averaging 7.5 points per game or better. Freshman forward Jessy Keitt chips in 8.5 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game ... Brooks and senior guard Kasey Gillis contribute 7.7 points per game and 7.5 points per game, respectively. Sophomore center Stacie Rhodes is second on the team's rebounding charts with 5.7 rebounds per game ... The Bulldogs open SAC play Wednesday, Dec. 5, hosting Newberry College for a 6 p.m. contest.
