Wingate’s Kate Edwards Named Women’s Basketball Player Of The Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Wingate University's Kate Edwards has been named the South Atlantic Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced today.

Edwards, a 5-9 senior guard from Laurinburg, N.C., averaged 17 points and four rebounds in the Bulldogs' two impressive wins last week.

On Wednesday, she scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds as Wingate defeated preseason favorite Newberry in the conference opener for both teams.

On Saturday, Edwards equaled her career high with 23 points in an 80-66 road win over No. 16 Shaw. She scored 16 of her 23 points after halftime and connected on six of her 10 three-point attempts in the contest.

For the week, Edwards averaged 17.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game and 2.0 steals per game. She hit 54.5 percent (12-of-22) of her field goals and 56.3 percent (nine-of-16) of her three-point field goals last week. For the season, Edwards is averaging 11.9 points per game. She leads the Bulldogs with 20 three-point field goals.

Edwards wins the award for the first time this season and the first time in her career. She is the fourth different student-athlete to win the award this year.

The South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the sports information directors of the league.
