Wingate’s Kasey Gillis Named Women’s Basketball Player Of The Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Wingate University's Kasey Gillis has been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced today.
Gillis, a senior guard from Indian Trail, N.C., exploded for a career-high 29 points as the Bulldogs defeated first-place Tusculum 89-80 Saturday afternoon. The victory ties Wingate (12-6 overall, 5-1 SAC) for first place in the league standings.
In the Tusculum contest, Gillis hit nine-of-13 field goals (69.2
percent) and 11-of-11 free throws (100.0 percent). She added four
assists, four rebounds and three steals.
On Wednesday night, Gillis posted 13 points and six assists as the Bulldogs won a thrilling 86-81 overtime decision at Mars Hill.
For the week, Gillis averaged 21.0 points per game, 5.0 assists per game, 2.5 rebounds per game and 2.5 steals per game. She shot 57.1 percent from the floor (12-of-21) and 94.7 percent from the charity stripe (18-of-19).
On the season, Gillis is averaging 11.6 points per game, 2.8 assists per game and 2.5 rebounds per game. She is second on the Wingate charts in scoring.
Gillis wins the award for the first time in her career and is the third different Wingate player to win the award this season.
The South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week is determined by a vote of the sports information directors of the league.
