Newberry Names Sean Page Head Women’s Basketball Coach
NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Andy Carter proudly announced the appointment of Sean Page as the school's head women's basketball coach today.
"We're very excited to hire someone with Sean's quality and background to lead our women's basketball program," Carter said. "I believe he will have an immediate impact with this team.
"Sean has all of the tools necessary to take the program from where it is today to where we want to be; competing as a national contender," Carter added.
"This is a great program that has had a tremendous amount of
success over the last four or five years," Page said. "The
administration here is tremendous. The college is committed to
excellence, winning championships and competing at the national
level.
"My goal is to have an opportunity to play for the national championship. I've talked with the team and we're already talking about winning our conference, moving past regionals and the Elite Eight and winning a national championship," Page added.
Page comes to Newberry after two seasons at Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky. In his two years at the helm, the Bearcats went 38-27.
Prior to Page's leadership, Brescia had won 11 games in the previous two seasons and was 1-29 in the 2005-2006 regular season (3-30 overall).
In his initial season at Brescia, Page was named the NAIA Division I Women's Independent Coach of the Year after leading the team to a 20-14 record and a berth in the NAIA National Tournament. The Bearcats upset top-seeded Lee University in the opening round to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. The win was the first win by a No. 8 seed over a top seed in NAIA Tournament history.
In 2007-08, the Bearcats recorded a record of 18-13, once again advancing to the NAIA National Tournament. BU was eliminated in the first round of the tournament by Lee.
Prior to his employment at Brescia, Page spent five years as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level.
He spent one year at Boise State University, followed by four seasons at Troy University. As an assistant coach, Page's duties included on-court coaching, practice and game preparation, individual player development, scouting, video breakdown and analysis, preparing scouting reports, recruiting, academic counseling, media relations and monitoring strength and conditioning programs. During his five years at the NCAA Division I level, Page recruited three conference freshmen of the year and coached nine all-conference representatives.
Before his coaching career in the United States, Page spent many years coaching at various levels in his native Australia. He holds an Australian National Coach Accreditation Scheme level two and was a Head Coach in the Australian Basketball Association (ABA) from 1994 to 2001.
As an ABA head coach, Page's teams had three final four appearances and a conference championship. He also coached numerous junior representative teams at the local, regional, state and national levels dating back to 1985, including a National Championship win with the Queensland Under-20 Women's team in 1995.
Page's coaching experience in Australia also included a stint with Basketball Queensland as a Regional Development Officer and as an Intensive Training Center Program (ITCP) Head Coach. As part of the first ITCP in Queensland, he worked with elite athletes and coaches from the Sunshine Coast and various other regions in Southeast Queensland. As the Regional Development Officer, Page was responsible for the marketing, promotion and growth of the sport in the Sunshine Coast region.
Other responsibilities included coordinating skills camps and clinics for junior players within all associations and schools in the region. He also conducted live-in camps for novice and elite players, along with instructional courses for coaches and officials.
Page also wrote a weekly column for a local newspaper, as well as several articles for various sporting publications. He served as Sports Information Director during his tenure at Brescia.
Page, who hails from Maroochydore, Queensland, Australia, is married to the former Susan Sessions from Birmingham, Ala. The couple has two daughters, Amy, 13, and Hannah, 8, and a newborn son, McCauley.
