BREVARD - The Tornados went 1-1 on the week first losing to Newberry on Wednesday, 66-47...Samantha Winn led the team with 21 points...followed by Anna Schlobohm with eight...Brevard posted a season low eleven turnovers to Newberry's 17...Brevard then defeated Mars Hill on Monday, 87-72...Winn once again led the Tornados in scoring with 24...Three additional Tornados reached double digit scoring figures....Holli Flippo scored 15 shooting four for nine and adding, five rebounds, two assists, and a steal...Schlobohm scored 13 while adding seven rebounds, all defensive, and four assists...Millie Wharton scored 11, shooting nine for ten from the free throw line leading the team to a 77 percent average...Brevard out rebounded Mars Hill 43-28 led by Winn and Wharton who pulled down eight each...The Tornados travel to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday before returning home to play Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
CARSON-NEWMAN - No. 12 Carson-Newman dropped both of their contests this past week, falling to 16-3 on the year and 6-3 in South Atlantic Conference play ... The Lady Eagles are tied with the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne for third in the league standings ... On Wednesday, C-N fell in overtime to Catawba by a 75-66 score ... Senior guard Ashley Kyle led the way with 18 points, seven assists and four rebounds while senior forward Shari Buford nearly had a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks ... The Lady Indians outshot the Lady Eagles 43.5 to 36.1 percent for the contest and hit 12-of-12 free throws in the extra period ... Carson-Newman fell for the third straight time Monday afternoon as the team traveled to Newberry ... The matchup with the scarlet and gray was postponed to Monday due to the winter storm that affected the southern Appalachian region over the weekend ... Junior guard Mandy Mendenhall led C-N with 15 points, all coming in the second half, and added four steals ... Buford had yet another double-double, recording 11 points and 11 rebounds while freshman guard Candis Clear added 10 points of her own ... The Lady Eagles outshot Newberry 41.2 to 38.1 percent for the game, but were out-rebounded on the offensive glass by a 15-8 margin ... Carson-Newman travels to Bristol, Tenn., on Wednesday to take on King at 5:00 p.m., before returning home to play Mars Hill Saturday night in Holt Fieldhouse at 6:00 p.m. ... C-N defeated King, 82-49, and Mars Hill, 88-80, in the first contest of the season series this year.
CATAWBA - The Catawba women knocked off 12th-ranked Carson-Newman in its only game last week ... The Lady Indians pulled out a 75-66 victory in overtime ... The win came three years to the date of its last win over a ranked team, ironically also against Carson-Newman (20th) in 2007 ... The win was the fifth straight for Catawba and gave the Lady Indians a share of the league lead after the first half of conference play ... Catawba led for nearly the entire contest ... Carson-Newman twice erased double-digit deficits to force overtime ... In the extra period, the Lady Eagles took a quick three-point lead, but Catawba used a strong effort from the line to rally ... Catawba made a dozen free throws in the overtime and held C-N to just two free throws and one late basket after the early three-pointer ... Dana Hicks scored 26 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds in the win ... It marked her 10th double-double of the season ... Nisha Long followed with 16 points and Milica Ivanovic added a dozen ... A 12-0 burst early in the first half gave Catawba a 21-9 lead and C-N would not lead again until the opening seconds of overtime ... The Lady Indians held a 49-34 edge on the boards and helped hold the Lady Eagles to 36 percent shooting ... Catawba canned 43.5 percent of its attempts ... Catawba finished 17-of-18 at the line ... Over the last two years in the final two minutes and overtime of games with a margin in single digits Catawba has connected on 74 of 77 from the line ... Hicks leads Catawba in both scoring (15.4) and rebounding (10.8) ... Long is scoring 14.1 points a game and Ivanovic is adding 13.4 a contest ... Catawba will travel to Wingate when it returns to action on Wednesday ... The Lady Indians play host to Tusculum on Saturday.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's basketball team (13-6, 6-3) lost twice in the past six days to fall into second place in the South Atlantic Conference standings with a pair of setbacks to Wingate (73-70) and Tusculum (75-65) on Wednesday and Monday, repsectively … The Bulldogs' Kurie Washington came off the bench to tally a game-high 24 points while Stacie Rhodes added 18 points as Wingate halted L-R's three-game winning streak … L-R senior guard Jami Safrit (Hickory, N.C.) finished with a team-high 16 points including four three-pointers while senior guard Amber Holt (Charlotte, N.C.) added 13 points but the Bears couldn't hold a nine-point lead (62-53) with under six minutes left in failing to win at Wingate for the first time since the 1999-00 season … Against the Pioneers, the Bears fell behind by 27 points on two occasions (53-36 and 55-28) in the second half but rallied to cut the margin to seven points (69-62) with just over a minute left but the deficit was too great to overcome … Tusculum's Jasmine Gunn led the way with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals while Lenoir-Rhyne senior guard Brittany Mitch (McLean, Va.) finished with a double (14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds) despite the setback … Senior guard Amber Holt (Charlotte, N.C.) added 14 points but the Bears shot just 24 percent (six-of-25) from behind the three-point line in the loss … Holt ranks sixth on Lenoir-Rhyne's all-time list in points (1,382) and third in assists (379) … Safrit and senior center Denise Moore (Newport News, Va.) are looking to become the 15th and 16th players in school history to cross the 1,000-point mark in his career … Safrit has 993 points while Moore has 973 points … Safrit is also fourth in career assists (371) … Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to face Brevard (Wednesday at 6 p.m.) and Newberry (Saturday at 6 p.m.) this week in a pair of South Atlantic Conference games … L-R leads the all-time series with both Brevard (7-0) and Newberry (21-13) … Lenoir-Rhyne defeated Brevard earlier this season by a 78-67 score but the fell to Newberry, 77-59 … L-R is 6-0 at home this year and has won 12 straight South Atlantic Conference games Regular Season contests at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - King College was unable to come up for an answer for Lincoln Memorial University's Dayshalee Salaman and her 35 points Wednesday as the Lady Railsplitters coasted to the 80-71 victory … The Lady Railsplitters jumped out to a large lead early … Salaman had 14 points in the first 10 minutes, the same amount that King scored … The Carolina, Puerto Rico, native went onto finish with 22 in the first half … LMU took a 50-28 lead to halftime … King fought back in the second half to trail by only six with under six minutes left, but could not come any closer … In addition to Salaman's 35 points, Carolyn Mills provided 10 points for LMU. Whitney Holmes led LMU on the boards with eight … From the field, the Lady Railsplitters were 29-for-60 (48.3 percent) and in comparison, King went 22-for-57 (38.6 percent) … Salaman had five of LMU's three pointers and King was 5-for-17 (29.4 percent) from behind the arc … King won the rebounding battle 39-33 … LMU evened the season series with King at 1-1. King won the previous meeting 63-58 in Harrogate on Nov. 18 … On Monday afternoon, the Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team won its third straight game including its second consecutive conference victory with a 66-55 win over South Atlantic Conference opponent Wingate University … With the exception of trailing 2-0 on Wingate's Kurie Washington's jumper with 19:22 to play in the first half, the Lady Railsplitters led the remaining 39:38 on a run that was started by sophomore guard Amberly O'Dell's 3-pointer at the 17:54 mark … From that point, LMU dominated the game in nearly every aspect by opening up a 10-point lead in the first half and taking an 8-point advantage into the locker room … The Lady Railsplitter defensive effort against the Bulldogs in the first half was a season best as well … LMU limited Wingate to only 14 first half points and a dismal 16.1 percent shooting from the field while holding the WU women scoreless behind the arc over the first 20 minutes of play … The second half saw the Lady Railsplitters open up a 16-point lead with 17:11 to go … Wingate made several runs throughout the second half but the LMU women held a double digit lead through the majority of the game before eventually coming away with their 11-point margin of victory … Although she was somewhat under the weather, sophomore guard Dayshalee Salaman led LMU in scoring with 16 points … Guard/forward Carolyn Mills chipped in 13 points off the bench, most of which came at the stripe … Mills finished the night a perfect 9-9 at the line with six of those points coming down the stretch … Also in double figures for LMU were guards Amberly O'Dell and Destiny Williams … O'Dell was 4-6 behind the arc for 12 points while Williams fought for 11 points … Junior forward Blandine Kikwiki Mamuku finished the game one point shy of a double-double … Kikwiki Mamuku scored nine points and had a game-high 11 rebounds … The Bulldogs fall to 11-9 overall and 4-5 in the South Atlantic Conference while the Lady Railsplitters move to 7-12 and 4-5 in league play … LMU will host the Pioneers of Tusculum College Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the Tex Turner Arena.
MARS HILL - Mars Hill went 0-2 during the previous week of play losing to Tusculum and Brevard … The Mars Hill women's basketball team fell in overtime 102-92 to Tusculum on Wednesday in Pioneer Arena. … Tusculum opened the game on a 21-9 spurt before Mars Hill closed the gap. The Lions took their first lead of the game 24-23 off a three by Brittini Young (Ramseur, N.C.) at the 5:50 mark … Young hit another three 1:21 before the half to give Mars Hill a 35-31 halftime lead. Taylor Deal (Catawba, N.C.) had 15 points in the first period … The Lions took a six-point advantage, 37-31, 30 seconds into the second half off a jumper by Margaret Harvey (Greensboro, N.C.) before Tusculum tied the game at 41 with 16:26 left in regulation … Mars Hill's largest lead in the second half was off a jumper by Harvey with seven minutes remaining to make the score 68-61 … With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Jasmine Gunn made a layup to give the Pioneers a 79-77 lead. Young hit a layup with six seconds left to push the game into overtime … In the extra period, Tusculum asserted itself and never trailed. The Pioneers held an 11-point advantage, 99-88, at one point off two made free throws by Gunn … Young poured in 27 points. Deal had 23 points and nine rebounds. Harvey recorded 21 points. Krystal Moore (Summerfield, N.C.) had 11 points … Brevard ended a 21 game losing streak to Mars Hill and snatched its first ever win over Mars Hill 87-72 on Monday. The Lions drop to 4-16 overall and 1-8 in the league … Mars Hill opened the game on a 14-6 run. Margaret Harvey hit a layup five minutes into the contest to give the Lions an eight-point lead … Mars Hill led the entire first half until Millie Wharton hit two free throws to tie the game at 27 with 6:44 remaining. Holli Flippo hit a three at the 4:24 mark to give Brevard its first lead of the game, 34-33 … The Tornadoes closed out the first period strong and led 45-39 at halftime … Brevard led early in the second half and grabbed its first double-digit lead of the game at the midway point. A Lindsay Brendle layup gave the Tornadoes a 58-48 advantage … A Harvey layup with 7:55 remaining in the game cut the deficit to five points, 60-55, but Mars Hill would get no closer … Harvey pumped in a game-high 25 points. Brittini Young registered 17 points … The Lions were outrebounded 43-28 … Mars Hill will host Newberry on Wednesday. Tipoff from inside Stanford Arena is set for 6 p.m.
NEWBERRY - Newberry was impressive in a pair of wins over Brevard and Carson-Newman last week… Newberry got career highs out of Anita Bulcher (Russia, Ohio) and Jessica Bearzatto (Melbourne, Australia) in the process of taking down Brevard… Bulcher used 14 points and seven rebounds in the second half to reach her eleventh double-double of the year... She ended the night with a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds… Bearzatto set a career high as well with 11 assists… Her 11 assists are the most for Newberry in a single game in over a decade as the last player to produce 11 assists in a game was Shona Davis who did so against Limestone on January 12, 1998… Newberry spread the ball around in order to rack up more than 20 assists for the third time and get points out of six players… Newberry shot .473 (26-55) from the field in the game and held the Tornados to just .333 (21-63) from the floor… Newberry dominated the post in order to pull down 47 rebounds, nearly doubling Brevard's 25… The Newberry College women's basketball team controlled the second half in order to come from behind and knock off No. 12 Carson-Newman on Monday night... Newberry shot an impressive .381 (24-63) but was bested by Carson-Newman's .412 (21-51) mark… Newberry pulled down 40 rebounds in the game compared to 35 for the Eagles... Newberry amassed 15 offensive rebounds and outscored the Eagles 12-5 on second-chance points... Newberry forced 23 Carson-Newman turnovers and scored 28 points off of their miscues… The scarlet and gray kept Carson-Newman off of the scoreboard for 3:36 as part of a 17-3 run that put Newberry up 53-46 in the second half... Leanne Watson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) posted game-highs in both points and rebounds with 20 and 12, respectively... Watson also added four steals and two assists while shooting 8-8 from the free-throw line… Anita Bulcher (Russia, Ohio) also completed a double-double, her twelfth of the year... Bulcher scored 15 points and added 10 rebounds, two steals and an assist… Bearzatto led Newberry in assists for the thirteenth time this season with five… Newberry takes to the road on short rest to face off against Mars Hill on Wednesday night.
TUSCULUM - The Tusculum women's basketball team posted a 2-0 worksheet in South Atlantic Conference action last week, defeating Mars Hill in overtime on Wednesday, and surviving a late rally by Lenoir-Rhyne on Monday to stretch its winning streak to three games…A trio of Pioneers each recorded double-doubles for the first time in program history on Wednesday night against Mars Hill, led by All-American Jasmine Gunn with game-highs of 27 points and 10 assists…Catherine Hintz chipped in a career-high 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to notch her fourth double-double of the season, knocking down 10-of-15 attempts from the floor while tying a personal best with five blocked shots…Staci Hicks joined Gunn and Hintz with a double-double of her own, pouring in 15 points while pulling down a career-high 14 rebounds…The Pioneers won the battle on the glass by a 58-43 margin, registering a season-high with their 58 boards and out-rebounding the Lions 27-16 on the offensive end…Gunn climbed into third all-time on the program's career assists list on Wednesday night, passing Pioneer great Amy Connatser while becoming the third player in school history to record at least 450 helpers during her tenure…Kat Spears also reached an impressive milestone on Wednesday night, pulling down 11 boards to become the eighth player in program history to surpass the 500-rebound plateau…Tusculum continued its climb in the conference standings on Monday night, surviving a late rally to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne 75-65 in Pioneer Arena…Gunn led all scorers with 18 points while recording a game-high five steals…The All-American point guard climbed within 10 points of tying Nancy Malone for 10th on the program's all-time scoring list, currently sitting nine markers shy of Malone's career total of 1,252 points…Gunn also continued her climb up the program's all-time steals list, vaulting into sixth place with her 190th career theft…Hintz scored in double figures for the second straight game, pouring in 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds…Brittni Oliver joined Gunn and Hintz in double figures with 12 points, equaling her career-high…Freshman Kendal Baxter knocked down a pair of three-pointers to become the second freshman in program history to connect on at least 60 triples with 61 treys on the season… The 5-5 sharpshooter currently holds the eighth-highest single-season mark in school history, needing another nine triples to tie Chassity Martin's 2005-06 total of 70 for sixth place…Tusculum posted its best performance from the free throw line to date this season, converting 26-of-31 attempts at the charity stripe for a campaign-high 83.9 percent clip…The Pioneers rank second in the conference in scoring (78.3), field goal percentage (43.5), rebounding (44.5) and steals (11.2), while ranking third in scoring margin (+9.3) and blocked shots (4.1)…The Pioneers have six players averaging more than eight points per game, including the scoring duo of Gunn and Baxter, who have combined for an even 30 markers per contest through 19 games…Kat Spears is now within striking distance of the program's all-time blocked shots record, currently sitting second all-time with 126 career rejections, 15 behind former teammate Stephany Neptune's school-record total of 141 blocks…Gunn currently ranks in the top 10 in seven career categories, including assists (3rd/462), free throws made (3rd/363), free throws attempted (4th/468), steals (6th/190), while ranking first all-time in program history with an average of 5.7 assists per game…Jasmine Parker has quietly climbed into the top 10 on the program's career assists list, currently ranking eighth all-time with 256 helpers…Tusculum is on the road this week for a pair of SAC matchups, traveling to Harrogate, Tenn. on Wednesday to take on Lincoln Memorial before making the trip to Salisbury, N.C. for a Saturday tilt against Catawba.
WINGATE - The Wingate University women's basketball team split two SAC contests in the last six days. On Wednesday, Bulldog sophomore guard/forward Kurie Washington posted 24 points off the bench to lead Wingate to a 73-70 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University in Cuddy Arena. The Wingate reserves outscored the LRU substitutes 41-16 … Bulldog senior Stacie Rhodes scored 15 of her 18 points in the second half Wednesday. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® candidate posted team-highs in rebounds (eight) and blocked shots (four). Junior forward CC Brooks added nine points and four assists for the Bulldogs, as she hit seven-of-eight from the free throw line … The Bears came out hot, grabbing a 17-4 lead eight minutes into the first half. The Bulldogs would outscore Lenoir-Rhyne 24-9 over the final 11 minutes of the half to take their first lead of the game. Washington had 10 points in the stretch, including a jumper 13 seconds before intermission to put Wingate on top 28-26 … Lenoir-Rhyne came out hot again in the second half, taking a 36-28 lead less than three minutes into the second half. Wingate responded by scoring the next seven points, cutting the lead to one on a layup from Brooks at the 15:30 mark. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the half at the 12:05 mark on a pair of free throws from senior forward Erica Crumlin … The Bears had the answer, going on a 16-6 run over the next five minutes to take a 58-49 lead. Lenoir-Rhyne led 62-53 with 5:41 remaining. Wingate would respond with an 8-0 run to trim the lead back to one at the 4:12 mark. Rhodes got it started with a three-point play, while Washington capped it with a three-point play of her own to cut the LRU lead to 62-61 … Lenoir-Rhyne took a 64-61 lead on a pair of free throws at the 3:40 mark. Wingate answered with a Rhodes jumper to cut it to one. Sophomore guard Gladney Brown drained a pair of free throws with 2:41 remaining to put Wingate on top for good … Jumpers from Rhodes and freshman guard Sarah Wollett gave the Bulldogs a 69-94 lead with 59 seconds to go. Wingate knocked down four free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory … The Bulldogs shot 37.9 percent from the field in the game, while shooting 50 percent in the second half. Wingate connected on 28-of-32 free throws on the night (87.5 percent). The Bears shot 36.7 percent from the field, while hitting 21-of-24 free throws (87.5 percent). Lenoir-Rhyne held a 43-34 rebounding advantage, while Wingate held a 12-11 edge in second chance points. The Bulldogs converted 17 Lenoir-Rhyne turnovers into 21 points … On Monday afternoon, Lincoln Memorial University earned a 66-55 SAC victory over Wingate at Tex Turner Arena. Wingate is 11-9 overall and 4-5 in the SAC entering Wednesday's contest versus Catawba … Washington had a game-high 19 points to lead the Wingate attack, while pulling down five rebounds. Brooks added 18 points for the visiting Bulldogs. Wingate struggled in the first half. The Bulldogs scored only 14 points and trailed by eight at halftime. The Railsplitters quickly added to the lead in the second half, going up 32-16 at the 17:11 mark. The lead would stay in double figures until a jumper from Washington with 6:46 remaining in the game cut the deficit to nine at 46-37 … LMU built the lead back to 15 points at 52-37. The Bulldogs would not go away, using a late 7-0 run to cut the lead to 60-55 with 30 seconds remaining. Brooks had four points in the spurt, while senior guard Sarah Rosser added a three-point field goal. The Railsplitters responded, scoring the final six points of the game by knocking down six-of-six free throw attempts … Washington leads the Bulldogs with her 17.3 points per game. She is very consistent, as the 2009 SAC Freshman of the Year is averaging 17.4 points per game in league play. Washington is fifth on the SAC scoring charts … Rhodes has 21 of her team-best 42 blocked shots in SAC play. Rhodes is second in the SAC in blocked shots and third in individual field goal percentage (52.0 percent). Rhodes leads the Bulldogs with her 7.1 rebounds per game.
