BREVARD - The Tornados went 1-1 this week beginning the week with a 74-49 loss at Lenoir-Rhyne ... Ten Tornados contributed in scoring ... Samantha Winn led the team with nine points ... Alyssa Cutshaw followed with seven points ... Cutshaw combined to lead the team in scoring along with Katelynne Poole, each with four boards ... Brevard then defeated Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, 81-74 ... Samantha Winn scored 31 points and pulled down 11 rebounds ... Holli Flippo scored 13 for the Tornados shooting three of four from the field and a perfect six of six from the foul line within the last two minutes of the game ... Amber Roberts with 12, as she shot four of five from the field and three of four from 3-point range ... The Tornados shot 63 percent from the field in the first half and compiled a 57 percent average on the game ... Asheley Watkins led the team with five assists ... The Tornados are back in action next weekend when Wingate travels to Brevard for a 2 p.m. game.
CARSON-NEWMAN - No. 21 Carson-Newman got back on the winning track last week as it snapped a three-game losing streak both in the South Atlantic Conference and overall ... The Lady Eagles are now 18-3 and 7-3 in the SAC ... C-N defeated King (Tenn.) on the road Wednesday evening by a 73-64 score ... Carson-Newman used runs of 18-3 and 14-3 over the course of the game to seal the victory ... Senior forward Shari Buford recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while senior guard Ashley Kyle had 14 points as well ... Junior guard Katlin Moore led the C-N bench with 12 points as the Lady Eagle reserves outscored their Lady Tornado counterparts by a 34-14 margin ... Carson-Newman outrebounded King 50-44 and pulled down 25 offensive rebounds ... C-N picked up a SAC victory in the friendly confines of Holt Fieldhouse on Saturday evening as it defeated Mars Hill, 86-76 ... Ashley Kyle became the 15th player to eclipse the 1000-point scoring milestone at Carson-Newman as she tallied 12 points on the night ... Buford recorded yet another double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her 10th double-double in the last 13 games and her 13th on the season and added five blocks ... Freshman forward Tasha Phillips posted career highs in scoring and rebounding with a team-high 14 points and 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double ... The Lady Eagles were dominant on the boards for a second straight game, out-rebounding the Lions 55-41 including 23 offensive rebounds ... Carson-Newman sits one-half game out of first place in the SAC standings and will travel to league-leading Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. matchup at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium on the Hickory, N.C., campus ... The Lady Eagles will return home on Saturday to face Tusculum at Holt Fieldhouse at 6 p.m.
CATAWBA - The Catawba women dropped both its games this past week, falling 75-59 at Wingate and 80-56 vs. Tusculum ... The Lady Indians fell behind by double-digits by halftime in both losses and never rallied ... Wingate moved away from a 19-all tie in the final nine minutes of half, using a 15-2 run over a four-minute span, and the Lady Indians trailed 44-32 at the break ... Nisha Long tallied 15 points for Catawba, while Milica Ivanovic scored a dozen ... Dana Hicks just missed a double-double, scoring eight points and grabbing 15 rebounds ... Catawba shot just 30 percent in the loss and was outrebounded 55-33 ... Tusculum also pulled away over the second part of the first half, moving from a 16-14 lead to 41-23 lead at the break ... A nine-point spurt pushed the TC lead to 25-14 and the Pioneers closed the half on a 9-0 run ... The Lady Indians against struggled shooting, making just 30.3 percent ... Hicks recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds ... Brooke Whitley tossed in 11 points ... Catawba travels to Newberry on Wednesday and hosts Mars Hill on Saturday ... The Lady Indians won the initial meeting this season against both teams ... Saturday will serve as the Catawba "Pink Zone" game in support of breast cancer research.
LENOIR-RHYNE - The Lenoir-Rhyne University women's basketball team (15-6, 8-3) moved into first-place tie atop the South Atlantic Conference standings with a pair of league home wins over Brevard (74-49) and Newberry (69-57) on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively … Against the Tornados, senior Amber Holt (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Bears with 14 points while senior guard Jami Safrit (Hickory, N.C.) added eight points, nine rebounds and six assists in addition to crossing the 1,000-point mark in her career in spearheading the Bears to the win … L-R, which led by as many as 29 points (72-43) late in the second half, limited Brevard to just 31 percent shooting (13-of-42) for the game and forced 26 turnovers in the win … Holt scored a game-high 21 points and freshman guard Precious Elkins (Conyers, Ga.) added a double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds) as the Bears tied the Scarlet and Gray for first place in the SAC … Lenoir-Rhyne, which opened up a 20-point lead in the second half (60-40), also held Newberry to just 18-of-56 (32 percent) field goal attempts … Lenoir-Rhyne is 8-0 at home this year and increased its home winning streak in South Atlantic Conference Regular Season games to 14 … Senior guard Amber Holt (Charlotte, N.C.) is sixth on L-R's all-time career scoring list with 1,417 points and is third in assists with 386 … Safrit is fourth in career assists with 380 … Senior center Denise Moore (Newport News, Va.) is just 16 points away from becoming the 16th player in school history to score 1,000 points in her Bear career … L-R remains at home to take on Carson-Newman in a SAC showdown Wednesday at 6 p.m., before facing Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 6 p.m., in Harrogate, Tenn. … The Bears handed the Eagles their first loss of the year by a 78-67 score on January 23, 2010, in Jefferson City, Tenn. … Carson-Newman leads the all-time series with Lenoir-Rhyne, 36-17 … L-R defeated Lincoln Memorial, 91-74, on January 16, 2010, at home and leads the all-time series, 5-2.
LINCOLN MEMORIAL - On Wednesday evening, the Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team had a three-game win streak snapped when the Tusculum Pioneers knocked off the Lady Railsplitters 71-59 in South Atlantic Conference play … LMU was led in scoring by the bench play of junior guard Carolyn Mills and senior forward Cena Nasiloski … Mills entered the game and scored 13 points to take top scoring honors for the Lady Railsplitters while Nasiloski scored 12 and led LMU on the boards with seven rebounds … The Lady Railsplitters mounted a furious second half comeback, but it was not enough as they fell to Brevard 81-74 in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon … LMU (7-14, 4-7 SAC) had four players reach double-figures in scoring, led by Dayshalee Salaman's 19 points … Carolyn Mills added in 17, Destiny Williams added in 14 and Amberly O'Dell chipped in 11 points … Whitney Holmes led the Lady Railsplitters on the boards … After LMU tied the game at 10-10, the Tornados went on an 18-5 run and eventually stormed out to the 43-29 lead at the halftime intermission … The Lady Railsplitters came out in the second half and methodically chipped away at the lead, cutting it to 74-71 with 2:13 to go … However, LMU was forced to foul to get the ball back and Brevard went 7-8 from the line down the stretch to pick up the 81-74 victory … LMU will travel to Mars Hill for a 6 p.m. tip-off Wednesday evening … Then they return home Saturday, Feb. 13, to the Tex Turner Arena to face Lenoir-Rhyne on Think Pink Night … Fans are encouraged to wear pink that night and donate to the WBCA/Kay Yow Fund for breast cancer research … Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
MARS HILL - Mars Hill went 0-2 during the previous week of play with losses to Newberry and Carson-Newman. The Lions drop to 4-18 overall and 1-10 in the SAC … The Newberry women's basketball team held off Mars Hill 79-71 on Wednesday night inside Stanford Arena … Newberry led for most of the first half. Mars Hill's first lead in the first half came at the 14:30 mark off a layup by Katie Buckner (Canton, Ga.). Her drive to the basket made the score 12-11 … Krystal Moore (Summerfield, N.C.) hit a running jumper from the baseline to give Mars Hill a 35-34 advantage with three minutes remaining, but the Lions trailed 41-37 at halftime … Moore and Brittini Young (Ramseur, N.C.) each had 11 points for the Lions at halftime … Newberry grabbed its first double-digit lead of the game, 50-40, off a shot from behind the arc by McKinney three minutes into the second half … Taylor Deal (Catawba, N.C.) drained a short jumper for Mars Hill with 11:57 left in the game to cut the deficit to single digits, 59-50 … Trailing 70-59 with 4:43 left in the game, Young scored five straight points to make the score 70-64 in favor of Newberry. A Harvey layup two minutes later trimmed the Newberry advantage to five points, 71-66, but the Lions would get no closer … Young scored a game-high 27 points. Moore had 15 points. Deal registered 11 points and eight rebounds … Brittini Young scored a career-high 34 points, but it wasn't enough as the Mars Hill women's basketball team lost at Carson-Newman 86-76 on Saturday … Young, from Ramseur, N.C., was 9-17 from the field and 13-15 from the free throw line. She moved passed Lee Ann Enix into 17th place on the Mars Hill all-time scoring list. With 1,153 career points, Young needs six points to pass Lindsey Jones for 16th on the list … Krystal Moore (Summerfield, N.C.) scored the first two buckets of the game for Mars Hill to give the Lions an early four-point lead, but the rest of the contest belonged to Carson-Newman … Mars Hill cut the deficit to four points late in the first period off two free throws by Sky Assif (Cross Lanes, W.Va.), but the Lady Eagles led 36-30 at halftime … Carson-Newman held the upper hand for the entire second half. The Lady Eagles' largest lead of 17 points, 67-50, came at the 8:16 mark off a trey by Tasha Phillips (Clarkrange, Tenn.). The closest that the Lions got the rest of the way was eight points … Taylor Deal (Catawba, N.C.) chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds for Mars Hill. Narcissa Grayson (Danville, Va.) also had eight rebounds … Mars Hill will host Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday in a "Pink Out" to raise funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation. Tipoff inside Stanford Arena is set for 6 p.m.
NEWBERRY - The Newberry College women's basketball team defeated Mars Hill and fell to Lenoir-Rhyne last week … Despite giving up the more points than it had in the last eight games, Newberry's defense was sound as the scarlet and gray menaced the Lions into coughing up 19 turnovers … Newberry held the Lions to just nine field goals in the second half in order to thwart any potential comeback effort … The scarlet and gray enjoyed a .389 (28-72) shooting effort from the floor as they held the Lions to .361(22-61) in the affair … Newberry continued to display its dominance beneath the basket by pulling down 50 rebounds and only allowing the Lions nine offensive boards … Anita Bulcher (Russia, Ohio) and Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) each netted 18 points to lead all Newberry scorers. Bulcher amassed 11 rebounds as well, completing her thirteenth double-double on the year and third in as many games … Jessica Bearzatto (Melbourne, Australia) offered a brilliant performance on the night as well … In addition to 16 points, Bearzatto amassed five assists and three steals, both of which were game highs … Leanne Watson (Stone Mountain, Ga.) pulled down 15 rebounds for the scarlet and gray and led all players in the game as well. Amy Browne (Maroochydore, Australia) contributed 14 points to Newberry's effort … The Newberry College women's basketball team fell to Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday afternoon after being outshot and outrebounded by the Bears … The scarlet and gray fell victim to Lenoir-Rhyne's hot shooting as the Bears shot .456 (26-57) from the floor … Newberry only converted on .321 (18-56) of its field goals … Newberry was also bested on the rebounding effort for only the fifth time this season … Lenoir-Rhyne pulled down 40 rebounds while Newberry tallied 36 … Newberry is 1-4 this season when outrebounded by its opponent… Anita Bulcher's (Russia, Ohio) 12 points and 10 rebounds were good enough for her fourteenth double-double of the season and fourth consecutively … Helen McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) paced Newberry's scoring effort with 15 points … Newberry hosts Catawba on Wednesday in another game that will have heavy implications on the top of the SAC standings … The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in Eleazer Arena where Newberry is 10-0 this season and 21-1 under Sean Page.
TUSCULUM - The Tusculum College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 2-0 worksheet in South Atlantic Conference play last week, registering a pair of double-digit victories over Lincoln Memorial and Catawba on the road to move into fourth place in the conference standings…The Pioneers avenged their home loss to the Railsplitters earlier on Jan. 6 in decisive fashion, defeating LMU 71-59 on Wednesday to even the season series behind Jasmine Gunn's eighth 20-point game of the campaign…Gunn recorded game-highs of 21 points and five assists against the Railsplitters, moving into a tie with Pioneer great Kristen New for ninth on the program's all-time scoring list with 1,264 career markers…Catherine Hintz joined Gunn in double figures with 15 points, while Staci Hicks and Jasmine Parker each poured in 10 markers…Parker also pulled down a career- and game-high 10 rebounds to record her first career double-double…The Pioneers knocked down at least 43 percent of their field goal attempts for the fourth consecutive game, connecting on 44.3 percent of their shots while converting just under 79 percent of their attempts at the free throw line…Tusculum won the battle on the glass in decisive fashion, out-rebounding the Railsplitters by a 43-30 margin while holding the conference's top three-point shooting team to a 31.6 percent clip from long-range…The Pioneers continued their strong play on Saturday at Catawba, leading by at least 20 points for much of the second half en route to an 80-56 victory over the Catawba Indians…Gunn shined once again for the Pioneers, turning in her third double-double of the season with 24 points and 11 assists…The 4-11 All-American knocked down 10-of-16 attempts from the floor while hauling down seven rebounds to pace the Pioneers to their fifth straight victory… Gunn posted at least 20 points for the 10th time this season, moving into sole possession of ninth place on the program's all-time scoring list, while needing just 13 markers to tie Pam York for eighth… Freshman Kendal Baxter scored in double figures for the 11th time this season, knocking down five three-pointers to join Gunn in double-digit scoring with 15 points while recording her sixth game with at least five triples this year…The 5-5 freshman sharpshooter has knocked down 67 three-pointers so far this season, three shy of tying Chassity Martin's 2005-06 total for seventh on the program's single-season list…The Pioneers lead the conference in field goal percentage (43.8) while ranking second in scoring (78.0), scoring margin (+10.1), rebounding (44.2) and steals (10.8).Tusculum has six players averaging more than eight points per game, including the scoring duo of Gunn and Baxter, who have combined for over 30 markers per contest through 21 games…Kat Spears is now within striking distance of the program's all-time blocked shots record, currently sitting second all-time with 126 career rejections, 15 behind former teammate Stephany Neptune's school-record total of 141 blocks…Gunn currently ranks in the top 10 in seven career categories, including assists (3rd/478), free throws made (3rd/372), free throws attempted (3rd/479), steals (6th/193), while ranking first all-time in program history with an average of 5.8 assists per game…Jasmine Parker has quietly climbed into the top 10 on the program's career assists list, currently ranking eighth all-time with 261 helpers…Gunn also ranks eighth on the conference's all-time assists list, 10 helpers shy of tying Catawba great Angela Harbour for seventh place…Tusculum resumes its SAC schedule this week with a Wednesday matchup with Wingate in Pioneer Arena before making the short trip to Jefferson City, Tenn. on Saturday to take on archrival Carson-Newman.
WINGATE - Sophomore guard/forward Kurie Washington had 20 points and seven rebounds as the Wingate University Bulldogs defeated the Catawba College Indians 75-59 in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night in Cuddy Arena. With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 12-9 overall and 5-5 in the SAC. The Catawba contest was Wingate's only action last week ... Washington knocked down three-of-six shots from beyond the arc, while also connecting on nine-of-13 free throws for her game-high 20 points. Senior center Stacie Rhodes added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs, while senior guard Sarah Rosser contributed 11 points. Freshman guard Sarah Wollett filled the statistics sheet with eight points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals ... Wingate used a 15-2 first half run to turn a tie game into a 13-point lead. Washington got it started with a three, while freshman guard Britney Mitchell capped it with a jumper at the 5:22 mark to make it 34-21. Rosser had five points in the spurt. The Bulldogs never trailed the rest of the way ... Wingate scored the first nine points in the second half to take a 53-32 lead. Freshman forward Tish Logan scored the first four points in the spurt, while Washington finished it with a pair of free throws. The Bulldogs dominated the glass, holding a 55-33 rebounding advantage, including a 22-11 edge in offensive boards. Wingate had 25 second-chance points, compared to Catawba's 11. The Bulldogs also outscored the Catawba Indians 28-16 in the paint ... The Bulldogs hit the road for their next two contests. Wingate returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 10, traveling to Tusculum College for a 6 p.m. start. The Bulldogs visit Brevard College Saturday for a 2 p.m. encounter. Wingate returns home Wednesday, Feb. 17, hosting Mars Hill College at 6 p.m. ... Wingate is 8-0 overall this season when holding opponents to 59 points or less. The Bulldogs lead the SAC in field goal percentage defense, holding opponents to 35.6 percent shooting. Wingate is second on the SAC charts in team scoring defense, giving up only 62.6 points per game ... Washington is fifth on the SAC charts with 17.4 points per game. A very consistent performer, she is averaging 17.7 points per game in league contests. Rhodes is second in the SAC, blocking 2.0 shots per contest. She is fifth on the field goal percentage list, hitting 52.2 percent of her attempts this year
