Four Women’s Basketball Players Named To Capital One Academic All-District Team

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Four women's basketball players from the South Atlantic Conference have been named to the 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District Women's Basketball District III College Division team.

Mars Hill College senior Brittini Young was named to the first team. Newberry College seniors Jessica Bearzatto and Helen McKinney were both named to the Second Team, as was Catawba College senior Milica Ivanovic.

Young makes the team for a second consecutive season after being chosen as a second team selection in 2010.

Young sports a 3.77 GPA in Business administration. First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the national Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where First, Second and Third Team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

On the court, Young ranks second in the South Atlantic Conference in assists with 4.06 per game and fourth in scoring at 17.9 points per game.

Bearzatto (Melbourne, Australia) earned a 3.96 grade point average and is earning a sports management degree while McKinney (Owensboro, Ky.) holds a 3.54 GPA and is seeking a degree in Biology.

"I'm obviously very proud of both of these young ladies," said Newberry head coach Sean Page. "The fact that they work just as hard off the court as they do on the court really says something about their character. We bring these girls in with the hopes that they can earn their degree as well as be successful in basketball and these two have definitely used their time here wisely."

Bearzatto has started all 19 games for the Wolves this season and is currently leading the conference in assists. McKinney is Newberry's all-time leader in three pointers made at Newberry and was the first Newberry player to score 33 points or more in a single game in 21 seasons.

Ivanovic (Belgrade, Serbia) is averaging 15.7 points per game for the Catawba Indians, who are 14-10 and currently stand fourth in the conference standings. The senior guard leads the team with 57 three-point goals and is also pulling down 5.8 rebounds a contest. Academically, Ivanovic has made the Dean's List in each of her three semesters at Catawba and also made the Presidential Honor Roll in 2009-10.

District III (college division) includes all non-NCAA Division I schools (Division II, III and NAIA) in Florida, Georgia, Virginia and North and South Carolina. Student-athletes selected for Academic All-District honors must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. They must possess at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale). They must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

The 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District ®Women's Basketball Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, have been released to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performance on the floor and in the classroom. The Academic All-District ® teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The University Division team includes NCAA Division I participants, while the College Division team combines NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools.
