Newberry’s Leanne Watson Named Women’s Basketball Player Of The Week

ROCK HILL, S.C. ­- Newberry College's Leanne Watson has been named the South Atlantic Conference women's basketball Player of the Week for the week ending February 20, 2011.

Watson, a senior forward from Stone Mountain,Ga. (Stone Mountain HS), had two of the best games of her career this past week as she combined for 37 points and 18 rebounds during the Wolves' two wins.

Watson picked up her fifth double-double of the season during the Feb. 16, showdown with Wingate as she put in 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds during the 66-50 win on the road.

Three days later against Carson-Newman, Watson scored a career high 23 points and came down with eight rebounds during the 65-61 victory, the Wolves' third straight. Watson was also 7-of-8 from the free throw line against the Eagles.

For the week, Watson shot 65.2 percent from the field and 87.5 percent from the free throw line and averaged 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.

For the season, Watson averages 9.3 points (25th in SAC) and 7.4 rebounds (6th in SAC) per contest.
