GREENVILLE, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The No. 2 seed Carson-Newman Eagles and the No. 4 seed Anderson Trojans battled through all four quarters with the Eagles outscoring the Trojans in the first and second half to secure an 83-58 win and their third Women's Basketball Championship on Sunday (March 6). With the win, the Eagles improve to 26-5 on the year, while Anderson falls to 21-10 overall.
It was a battle of the offenses in the first quarter of action as the Eagles and Trojans went head-to-head with Carson-Newman taking a narrow lead of 19-12. At the half the Eagles ran away with the ball to take a 16-point lead at the half with a score of 42-26. Carson-Newman's Braelyn Wykle and Lindsey Taylor led the team in points scored at the half with 10 each.
Carson-Newman turned up the defensive pressure to start the second half taking a huge lead in the third quarter and an even bigger lead of 25 points in the end and an eventual tournament championship.
Leading the charge for the Eagles was redshirt sophomore Braelyn Wykle with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds, followed by junior Lindsey Taylor with 17 points and nine rebounds. A pair of Trojans netted double figures with Shameka McNeill and Samantha Michel pouring in 17 and 10 points respectively.
Taylor was named the championship's Most Valuable Player, with teammates Braelyn Wykle and Abby Wilson earning All-Tournament honors as well. The full All-Tournament team is listed below.
