Newberry, Tusculum Selected to NCAA Women’s Golf Championship Field
INDIANAPOLIS - Newberry and Tusculum have earned selections to the 2012 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship, it was announced by the association on Monday. The two SAC teams will join seven other programs in the South Regional at Stonebrook Golf Course in Pace, Fla.
Regional play will take place May 6-8, followed by the finals May 16-19 in Louisville, Ky., as part of the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival.
Newberry is coming off a dominant 19-stroke victory at the 2012 Food Lion SAC Golf Championship. The Wolves, led by SAC Player of the Year Maria Luz Besio, recorded five top-five finishes in 2011-12.
In addition to winning the SAC Championship, Newberry also captured titles at the Patsy Rendleman Invitational and the Terrier Intercollegiate.
Tusculum, meanwhile, finished third at the SAC Championship and recorded tournament titles at the Anderson Invitational and Agnes McAmis Memorial Invitational earlier this season.
The Pioneers finished in the top five at nine of their 10 events during the 2011-12 season.
Additionally, Carson-Newman's Erica Ray earned one of the Championship's 16 individual selections. Ray had two top-20 individual finishes and posted a non-adjusted scoring average of 79.9 in 2011-12.
West Florida University is the host institution for the South Regional.
