Newberry, Tusculum’s Herbert Selected to Compete at NCAA Women’s Golf Regional
For the fourth season in a row, Newberry has earned a selection to the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf South Regional, which will take place May 5-7 at the Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla. The Wolves will be joined by Tusculum’s Emee Herbert, who was selected to the championship as an individual.
INDIANAPOLIS – For the fourth season in a row, Newberry has earned a selection to the NCAA Division II Women's Golf South Regional, which will take place May 5-7 at the Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla. The Wolves will be joined by Tusculum's Emee Herbert, who was selected to the championship as an individual.
Newberry is the No. 9 seed in the tournament, while Herbert earned one of just four individual selections from the South Region.
The Wolves are coming off a first-place finish at the 2013 Food Lion SAC Golf Championship, where senior Barbara Castro won the individual medal with a 16-over 232. Newberry also won team championships this season at the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate and the Patsy Rendelman Invitational, and had four other top-10 finishes.
Herbert, meanwhile, becomes just the second player in Tusculum history to be selected to the NCAA Championship as an individual. The 2012-13 SAC Player of the Year has a scoring average of 76.25, currently the lowest in program history. She finished in the top five at four events this season, including individual titles at the Tusculum Fall Classic and the Agnes McAmis Memorial.
In all, 36 teams and 16 individuals earned selections to the regional round. The 2013 NCAA National Championships, which will consist of the top three teams and top three individuals from non-advancing teams from each regional, will then take place May 15-18 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
