Wingate Captures 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Championship Title
Matthews, N.C. – The Wingate Bulldogs women's lacrosse team has been named the 2023 SAC Women's Lacrosse Champions after defeating Newberry 14-8. The Bulldogs had an impressive season, finishing with a perfect 10-0 record in conference play and a 17-2 overall record.
Both Newberry and Wingate scored two goals each in the first quarter, but the Bulldogs quickly pulled away, scoring four goals in the second, third, and fourth quarter to bring the total to 14. Tournament MVP Leah Knowles led the way for Wingate, scoring four goals and registering six draw controls, four turnovers, and three caused turnovers. Teammate Paige Kamer also recorded four goals and added an assist. Kaleigh Wilgeroth scored three goals while the remaining single goals were scored by Bella Pellet, Becca Ruiz, and Julia Garvin.
Wingate put up a strong defense as Katie Koroly registered two ground balls, three draw controls, and four caused turnovers. Becca Ruiz recorded four ground balls, one draw control, one turnover, and one caused turn over and Abby Burke contributed two ground balls and one caused turnover. In goal, Megan Biase recorded seven saves on 15 shots and added four ground balls and one caused turnover.
Newberry's Emma Jobs and Serena Elias led the scoring for the Wolves with two goals each while the remaining single Newberry goals were scored by Lana Howell, Marissa Plumer, Hannah Bond, and Cassell Richardson. Mackenzie Dorr collected a game-high five ground balls.
