Catawba Places Six on Women’s Soccer All-Region Squad
Catawba College placed six players on the 2002 NSCAA/adidas women's soccer All-Southeast Region team. The six were the most of any school as regional finalist North Florida and Kennesaw State each had four representatives on the three teams.
Earning first team honors for the Lady Indians were Kim Clayton (Haw River, NC) and Kyley Thompson (Hagerstown, MD).
Clayton, a senior goalkeeper from Eastern Alamance High School, repeated her first team selection from last year and made the all-region team for the third time in her career. This season she posted an 0.72 goals against average and tied the school mark with 11 shutouts. For her career, she set school and conference marks with 32 shutouts and had an 0.91 goals against average.
Thompson, a freshman forward from Smithsburg High School, led the Lady Indians with 14 goals before breaking her collarbone and missing the final two matches. She also added nine assists.
Second team honors went to freshman Lisa DeMeyer (Jamestown, NC/SW Guilford), freshman Maran Bock (Avondale, AZ/Westview) and junior Jamie Fink (Woodbridge, VA/Gar-Field). DeMeyer, a defender, started all 19 matches and added a goal and two assists. Bock, a midfielder, had eight goals and six assists, while Fink, a forward, also had eight goals. Third team honors went to freshman defender Lindsay Layman (Hagerstown, MD/Smithsburg), who started all 19 matches as the sweeper.
Catawba is member of the South Atlantic Conference, a NCAA II
league comprised of eight teams in North Carolina, South Carolina
and Virginia. The Lady Indians set a school record with 15 wins in
2002, posting a 15-3-1 record and sharing the conference
championship. Catawba claimed its sixth SAC Tournament title and
qualified for the NCAA II regionals for the second time.
