2006 SAC Women’s Soccer All-Conference Team announced
Carson-Newman?s Angus named Player of the Year
ROCK HILL, SC - Rebecca Angus, a senior forward from Middlesborough, England who led the South Atlantic Conference in scoring with 1.23 goals per match, was named the 2006 South Atlantic Conference women's soccer Player of the Year, earning the award for the second time in her career.
Mars Hill College freshman Caity Murnahan (Bloomfield Hills, MI / Lahser High School), who had five goals and three assists in her rookie season, was named Freshman of the Year.
Carson-Newman's Phil McNamara, who guided the Lady Eagles to their third conference title in four years, was selected Coach of the Year. He wins the award for the second time in his career.
The Scholar Athlete Award for women's soccer went to Heather
Schlick of Wingate University, a senior Spanish major with a minor
in communications who was an ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-American last year.
Joining Angus on the All-Conference team from Carson-Newman were midfielder Brittany Moore and defender Julie Nelson on the first team. Forward Christie Murray, midfielders Erica Stegner and Zarmena Kasparites and defender Stacey Thomas were named to the second team.
Conference runner-up Tusculum placed five on the All-Conference team, led by goalkeeper Whitney Waldrop on the first team. Forwards Becky Carreiro and Kelly Barron, midfielder Theresa Christie and defender Ashley Moreira were named to the second team.
Catawba and Newberry each placed four on the All-SAC squad, with Newberry getting a pair of first team selections.
Newberry forward Inga Woiwode and defender Elizabeth Jones were first team selections, while midfielder Mandi Butler and goalkeeper Danielle Beckerle were named to the second team
Catawba forward McKenzie Burman, the 2005 SAC Player of the
Year, was named to the first team for the Lady Indians. Defenders
Leigh Telzrow and Kim Crowley were named to the second team, as was
goalkeeper Kathleen Blake.
Presbyterian had three All-Conference selections. Midfielder Claire Joyce and defender Lindsey Leffler were first-team picks, while forward Lytle Cannon was named to the second team.
Mars Hill and Wingate each had two selections.
Mars Hill had a pair of first-team honorees in forward Jasmine Riley and Murnahan.
Wingate midfielder Lisa Service was a first-team selection, while forward Alexis Randazzo was named to the second team.
Lenoir-Rhyne defender Tara Learn, a first-team pick, rounds out the All-Conference team.
Schlick, a senior defender and team captain, is a member of Phi
Eta Sigma National Honor Society and Alpha Chi National Honor
Society and has been named to the Wingate President's List and SAC
Commissioner's Honor Roll.
On campus and in the community, Schlick is active in many activities, including serving as chaplain for the Wingate Student Government Association and Alpha Xi Delta sorority, and is president of Phi Sigma Iota, the foreign language honor society. She serves as treasurer of the Panhellenic executive board and is on the Campus Life executive board. She tutors both biology and Spanish and helped raise money with the Wingate women's soccer team for St. Jude's Research Hospital.
