Two Upsets In Food Lion SAC Women’s Soccer Tournament
Two of the top four seeds survived the quarterfinal round of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference women's soccer tournament. Seventh-seed Lenoir-Rhyne advanced by virtue of a penalty kick shootout over second-seed Newberry after those two teams went through two overtimes tied. Fifth-seed Tusculum edged fourth-seed Carson-Newman in a battle of the region's top-ranked teams.
This sets up semifinal action on Friday at Manchester Meadows Soccer Park in Rock Hill S.C., with Lincoln Memorial facing Tusculum and Catawba meeting Lenoir-Rhyne. The women's semifinals will be at 6 p.m.
No. 1 Lincoln Memorial 4, No. 8 Wingate 1
HARROGATE, TN - For the second time in less than a week, the Lincoln Memorial University women's soccer team defeated the Bulldogs of Wingate University on Tuesday afternoon, this time advancing to the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament semifinals in Rock Hill, South Carolina with a 4-1 victory.
On Saturday afternoon, the Lady Splitters defeated the Bulldogs in a tight 3-2 decision. In Tuesday's match, the Lady Railsplitters didn't waste time setting the tempo, as senior Heloisa de Oliveira (Campinas, Brazil) found the back of the net in the 1st minute of the match with help from teammate Camilla Verissimo (Brasilia, Brazil).
LMU leading 1-0, Wingate struck back less than 10 minutes later when Jenni Barbett found Madi Welch on a cross that was placed in front of the goal. Welch slammed a shot into the left side of the net to even the score at 1-1.
The Wingate goal gave the Bulldogs a little momentum but that quickly changed when LMU's Becky Thompson (Frederick, MD) was fouled in the box in the 19th minute on a breakaway. Oliveira then stepped in to notch her second goal on the penalty kick and the Lady Railsplitters again had a lead of 2-1.
As the late minutes of the first half ticked off the clock, the match moved into a defensive struggle. The struggle lasted until the 35th minute when reining South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week Becky Thompson used her speed to form a one-v-one situation with the Wingate goalkeeper and hit the back of the net to give LMU a 3-1 advantage. The goal clearly took the fight out of the Bulldogs and the Lady Railsplitters carried the lead into the half.
When the second half got underway, the defensive struggle resurfaced throughout the first twenty minutes of play. Finally, in the 66th minute, LMU senior Camilla Verissimo tallied her second assist of the match when she hit freshman Karina Campos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) with a cross from the right side and Campos chipped it past the keeper for the final 4-1 margin.
LMU's win ends the Bulldogs season with a 5-11-1 record while the Lady Railsplitters will join the LMU men's team on Friday in Rock Hill, South Carolina for the semifinals of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The Lady Railsplitters play Tusculum at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Lady Pioneers defeated Carson-Newman on Tuesday 2-1 to advance to this Friday's semifinal round.
The last time the Lady Railsplitters met the Lady Pioneers, Lincoln Memorial emerged a 3-1 winner over Tusculum when the Lady Pioneers were the #7 ranked team in the country. Admission to the match is $5.00 for adults and $2.00 for children under age 12, and students with a valid ID.

No. 7 Lenoir-Rhyne 1, No. 2 Newberry 1, 2 OT (L-R advances by penalty kicks)
NEWBERRY S.C. - No. 7 seeded Lenoir-Rhyne advanced past No. 2 seeded Newberry College on penalty kicks in the first round of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Indians and Bears fought to a 1-1 tie at the end of 110 minutes, sending the game to a penalty kick shootout.
Newberry fell down, 1-0 just 40 seconds into the game when Lenoir-Rhyne's Ariel Thompson connected on her first goal of the season. The Bears played the ball into the right corner where Thompson collected it and found some space for a shot to the far post. The ball flew just over the outstretched hands of Newberry keeper Danielle Beckerle (St. Louis, Mo.) and into the goal.
Newberry appeared to get the equalizing goal just three minutes later when Mandi Butler (Holly Springs, N.C.) shot a ball past Bear's keeper Nicole Ley. The ball hit off the far post and rolled along the goal line, but it was cleared off the line by Ley before it ever crossed.
Newberry managed six shots in the first half including four on goal but the Lady Indians were never able to push one across and the match headed to the break with Lenoir-Rhyne still leading 1-0.
The Bear's seemed to be on the verge of extending their lead early in the second half when Beckerle came out of goal to field a ball in the 53rd minute. Beckerle ran into a Lenoir-Rhyne player, causing her to drop the ball as she fell to the ground. Whitney Cline got the ball with an empty net in front of her and took a shot from the left side of the penalty area, but Greta Hewett (Charleston, S.C.) came in from her defender position to save the shot and preserve the one goal deficit.
The Lady Indians finally managed to pull even in the 56th minute when Inga Woiwode (El Paso, Texas) connected on her third goal in two games. In a play that was reminiscent of her first one against Carson-Newman, Woiwode received the ball on the left side of the box and one touched a shot to the far post, the ball sailed in to tie the game at 1. Adriana Farfan (W. Palm Beach, Fla.) earned the assist on the play.
In the 63rd minute, Newberry appeared to take the lead as Woiwode connected on a point blank shot from inside the 6-yard box but the goal was waived off on an offsides call. Two minute later Woiwode again took a shot from inside the 6-yard box, but Ley managed to just get her hand on it to preserve the tie.
With the score still tied at one at the end of regulation, the two teams headed into extra time.
In the extra periods both teams managed to put shots on goal but neither was able to connect for the "Golden Goal."
After 110 minutes of hard fought soccer the score remained tied 1-1, necessitating a penalty kick shootout to determine who would advance to the SAC Tournament semifinals.
Lenoir-Rhyne outscored Newberry 3-1 in the shootout as Ley made two saves to help propel the Bears into the semifinals.
"I am extremely proud of all the team, and what we have accomplished this year," said Head Coach Juan Favero. "Even though it is difficult to end a season on the lottery of pk's, I know our players left everything out on the field today and I can't ask for anything more as a coach."
It was fitting that Newberry's final game of the season ended in a double overtime tie as the Lady Indians have played in 10 overtime games this season, a new NCAA Division II record.
The tie marked the last match for the 11 seniors who have been the cornerstone of Newberry women's soccer for the past four years and who have helped to advance Newberry to it's current heights.
"I am especially thankful for the 11 seniors who have given their heart and soul to this program and are the foundation of the incredible turnaround the program has experienced," said Favero. "They are a special group of young women and Newberry College and the Lady Indians have been blessed to have them here."

Freshman Kenly Streetman (Mooresville, NC/Mooresville HS) got the final Catawba goal in the 72nd minute after getting a pass from Lindsay Hinkle (Highland, MD/River Hill HS).
Mars Hill avoided the shutout on a goal by Chloe Hickman (Knoxville, TN) in the 78th minute. She scored off a cross to the back post by Riley Dorsey (Gaithersburg, MD). Cala had saves for the Lady Lions, while Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, NC/NW Guilford HS) stopped five shots for Catawba.
