Pairings Announced For Food Lion SAC Women’s Soccer Tournament
ROCK HILL, SC - The Carson-Newman College women's soccer team, which won the regular-season title for the second time in three years, has earned the top seed for the 2008 Food Lion SAC Women's Soccer Tournament, the conference office announced Sunday.
Carson-Newman claimed the regular-season championship with its 1-0 win over Newberry on Sunday. The Lady Eagles (7-1 SAC, 13-5 overall) will face eighth-seed Mars Hill College (8-9-3 overall, 1-7 SAC) on Tuesday. Carson-Newman beat Mars Hill 2-0 during the regular season.
Catawba College is the second seed. The Indians are 6-1-1 in the SAC and 13-4-1 overall. Catawba will host seventh-seed Newberry (4-4 SAC, 8-8-1 overall) in the quarterfinals.
Wingate University is the third seed and will host sixth-seed Lincoln Memorial. Wingate is 5-3 in the SAC and 13-5 overall. Lincoln Memorial, the defending tournament champion, is 11-5-1 overall and 4-4 in the SAC. That will be a rematch of Saturday's final regular-season match, which Wingate won 1-0 in overtime.
Lenoir-Rhyne University captured the fourth seed with its victory over Tusculum on Saturday. Lenoir-Rhyne is 12-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in the SAC. Lenoir-Rhyne and Tusculum (10-8-1 overall, 4-4 SAC) will meet again in the tournament quarterfinals.
Tusculum, Lincoln Memorial and Newberry finished in a three-way tie for fifth place. All three went 1-1 against the other two and all three lost to top-seed Carson-Newman. Tusculum took a 2-1 overtime victory over second-seed Catawba to earn the fifth seed, while Newberry and Lincoln Memorial both lost to Catawba. Lincoln Memorial took the sixth seed by virtue of its 2-1 overtime win over Newberry.
Quarterfinal winners advance to the tournament semifinals, which will be held at Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday, November 7. The two women's semifinals will be played at 3 p.m.
The women's tournament finals will be Sunday, November 9 at 1 p.m. at Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex.
Admission to all Food Lion South Atlantic Conference tournament events is $5 for adults and $2 for college students and children.
