Brevard Names Shigeyoshi Shinohara As Women’s Soccer Coach

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College athletics department is pleased to announce the hiring of Shigeyoshi Shinohara as the new head women's soccer coach for the Tornados. Shinohara comes to Brevard from the University of Montevallo where he has served as the assistant women's soccer coach since August of 2005.

During his time at Montevallo, Shinohara was heavily involved in recruiting for head coach Patricia Hughes, and was also very involved in all facets of the operation of the women's soccer program.

"I am excited about the opportunity to bring in a head coach of this caliber who genuinely embraces the Division II philosophy of balancing academics and athletics. Coming from one of the top 25 Division II soccer programs in the country, Coach Shinohara understands what it takes to develop & build a successful program. His proven leadership, passion, work-ethic, ability to identify and recruit talent, and technical knowledge will provide him the fundamental tools necessary to develop a respected competitive program in the South Atlantic Conference. Not only is he a great addition to our coaching staff, but I am also thrilled about the positive impact he will make on our campus and in our community," stated BC Athletic Director, Kim Pate.

Shinohara takes over a team that finished 6-12-1, 0-8 in the South Atlantic Conference in their inaugural year as full members of both the SAC and NCAA Division II.

"The Brevard women's soccer program has a long established history in the past through Junior College and NAIA play; I feel privileged to be a part of this program," said Shinohara, "since the program is new to NCAA Division II, I am honored to escort this program into a new era and I look forward to building a strong and competitive program together alongside all the student-athletes at Brevard College. I am determined to have a great spring season in order to build a united team to compete in the fall in the South Atlantic Conference."

Shinohara started his coaching career in Yamaguchi, Japan where he was the assistant for the Seiki Football Club of a group aged 10-16 from 1994-2001. From there he moved to the United Soccer Academy where he was responsible for the day-to-day administrative operations as well as being a full-time coach where he coached one-on-one sessions with youth players whose ages ranged from 3-18.

Shinohara opened his collegiate coaching career in August of 2005 when he became the assistant women's coach at the University of Montevallo. During his time at Montevallo, the Falcons were the Gulf South Conference Champions in 2007, making it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Tampa in the South Region Championship match. Montevallo also was a Gulf South Tournament finalist in 2008.

In addition to his collegiate work, Shinohara has been a member of the Alabama Olympic Developmental Program staff from August 2005-present, evaluating and training players as well as coaching in spring and summer camps in the district and state. He also coached the 2005 Alabama State Cup Division II Champion South Shelby Futball Club Strikers 93 and assisted with the Birmingham United Soccer Association Alabama State League U15 Division I Champions Lady Jets 92 Blue team in 2006.

The 2008 Tornado Hall of Fame inductee for Exceptional Coaching, Joe Bartlinski, who led the Tornados to national prominence in the Junior College ranks had this to say about Shinohara, "Coach Shinohara is very well respected by his coaching peers because of his tremendous work ethic. Coach Shug's unbridled energy and enthusiasm will be greatly admired by both his colleagues on campus and his team. He will be a tremendous addition to a very proud athletic program."

Shinohara also holds an NSCAA Premier Diploma and an Advanced National Diploma as well as the F.A. Coaching License and the UEFA "B" Award International Coaching License from the Football Association in England.
