Six SAC Women’s Soccer Teams In Region Soccer Poll
INDIANAPOLIS - Six South Atlantic Conference women's soccer teams are listed in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings.
Carson-Newman is second in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Rankings. These rankings, calculated by a mathematical formula, are the official determinant for postseason play at the Division II level.
The Lady Eagles drop from the top spot they held in the first week of the rankings after tying Catawba College, 1-1, Saturday evening in South Atlantic Conference play.
Columbus State University of the Peach Belt Conference takes over first place.
Armstrong Atlantic State University is third this week while fellow SAC schools Catawba, Tusculum College and Wingate University round out the top six. Lenoir-Rhyne University at eighth and Newberry College at ninth also made the top 10.
Tusculum (11-3, 4-1 SAC) has won nine of its last 10 matches, including a 3-2 victory over Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference play last Wednesday. The Pioneer attack features a trio of talented freshmen, including Tramicka James, the team's leading scorer with seven goals and six assists.
Fellow rookies Kayla Durden and Kourtney Kavic have also found the back of the net with regularity for TC this season, tallying six and four goals, respectively, while Michelle Meade and Courtney Turner are ti! ! ed with James for the team lead with six assists.
This marks the first week for Newberry this season in the poll. In Newberry's lone game last week, the team took down Anderson University, 4-1. Newberry has built a good start in the case for next week's poll, defeating Lincoln Memorial, 1-0.
The conference tournament champion from the SAC, Peach Belt and Conference Carolinas will each be awarded automatic bids to the 2009 NCAA Division II Tournament while the three remaining highest-ranked teams will receive at-large bids to the postseason.
The final regular-season poll will be published November 4 and championship selections will take place November 9. Selections will be announced at 7 p.m. Eastern time, Monday, November 9 via a webcast selection show on NCAA.com.
