Anderson’s Agirre Named NSCAA National Player of the Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After scoring a remarkable six goals in her first two matches, Anderson University women's standout newcomer Idoia Agirre has been named National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) Division II College Player of the Week, announced by the Association on Tuesday.
Agirre shined through her first week of the regular season as she began the year with a pair of goals in the Trojans' 4-0 shutout over Shorter in the home opener. Two days later, the Legazpi, Spain native tallied four goals and an assist in a 7-1 rout of in-state rival, Southern Wesleyan. With her six goals on the young season, Agirre tops the South Atlantic Conference and is responsible for over half of the team's scoring.
"The recognition is well-deserved and really highlights her performances since joining our program," Anderson head coach Ciaran Traquair said. "Idoia has high standards and is a true student-athlete. This is a wonderful achievement for our team and for Idoia."
Agirre becomes the first AU student-athlete to earn a national player of the week honor from a national coaching association in the SAC era.
"I'm looking forward to watching her develop this season and hopefully she can help this program to many more firsts in the near future," Traquair said. "We are enjoying our soccer at the moment."
Agirre and the rest of the Trojans return to the pitch on Wednesday when head to archrival Erskine. Kick-off from Due West, S.C. is scheduled for 5 p.m.
