Compagner Wins Second National Title, SAC Teams Wrap Up Final Day of 2023 NCAA Championships
Twice in three days! Manon Compagner grabs her second national championship title
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- For the second time in three days, Manon Compagner can call herself a national champion winning the 100-yard freestyle Saturday night during the final session of the 2023 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships.
Compagner won gold in the women's 100-yard freestyle event Saturday in a near-record 48.97 to secure her second national championship of the weekend. The Netherlands native set a new personal record in the event. She also broke her own school record for the event twice in the span of a few hours. She now holds the top-three times for Carson-Newman women's swim in the 100-yard freestyle (49.47, 49.48, 48.47).
The senior's time was less than a second off the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships 100-yard freestyle record that is at 48.44 by Theresa Michalak from West Florida during the 2017 season.
Compagner also placed fifth in the women's 50-yard freestyle (22.81). Compagner raced again tonight with King, Natalia Amano, and Lily Parr in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The Eagles placed fifth in 3:22.40. Their efforts made a mark on the history books as the quartet set a new program record for Carson-Newman.
Kyla Blakemore locked down her second individual All-American title today in the women's 200-yard backstroke with a third-place finish in 1:58.18. Blakemore set a new personal record in the event, besting her previous top time of 1:59.66 at the South Atlantic Conference Championships. Blakemore also broke the Carson-Newman swim program record for the third time this season. Blakemore now holds the top five times for Carson-Newman women's swim in the event (1:58.18, 1:58.69 1:59.66, 2:00.00, 2:01.18).
Rachel Peden placed ninth in the women's 1650-yard freestyle finals with a time of 16:58.37, a season best performance in the event.
Carson-Newman men's swim finished sixth in the 400-yard freestyle relay to grab All-American honors in the event. Ridge McCay, Matthew George, Arthur Gluzman, and Hobson Stelling swam the event in 2:55.53, just shy of the program record.
Carson-Newman women finished 7th overall with 199 points while the men finished 16th with 62 points.
Wingate finishes sixth in '23 NCAA national championship meet
Indianapolis, Ind.----The Wingate University women's swimming team finished sixth in the 2023 NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships inside the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI Saturday night. The Bulldogs had three individual first team All-American swims Saturday, concluding the meet with a bronze medal and more AA trophies in the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Graduate student Kate Agger finished fourth in the 1650 freestyle (16:45.58), sophomore Marta Beesmans Barquero was fifth in the 200 back (1:59.39), senior Lily Sanocki took fifth place in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.00) and the 400 Freestyle relay of Lucie Andrews, Kelsea Munro, Amanda Wenhold, and Nina Azirovic finished third with a time of 3:21.48.
Bulldogs take eighth in '23 NCAA national championship meet
Indianapolis, Ind.----The Wingate University men's swimming team finished eighth in the 2023 NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships inside the Indiana University Natatorium at IUPUI Saturday night. The Bulldogs had three individual first team All-American swims Saturday, concluding the meet with an eighth-place showing and four additional first team AA trophies in the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Seniors Slava Ohnov and Marcel Snitko finished fifth (43.69) and eighth (44.06) in the 100 freestyle. Freshman Ney Chagas Filho finished fourth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:43.48. Wingate's 400 freestyle relay finished eighth as Snitko, Ohnov, Gabriel de Costa, and Ethan Hathcock touched the wall at 2:55.91. Sophomore Miguel Marcos finished 10th in the 1650 freestyle (15:22.87) and Freshman Jonatan Carlsson finished 11th in the 200 backstroke (1:46.47).
Gabi Moll finishes 14th at the NCAA National Meet
Indianapolis, Indiana—Freshman Gabi Moll finished in 14th place in the Women's 200 Breaststroke. Gabi from Randburg, South Africa, was the first women's swimmer to compete at the National meet since 2001. Saturday morning Moll earned her spot in the night finals by finishing with a time of 2:18.65 during prelims. In finals, Moll finished with a time of 2:19.91.
In an impressive first season Moll broke the school record in the 200 Breaststroke five times and ended over a 20-year drought on the Catawba's women's side of not having an individual qualifier for the NCAA Championships. An impressive feat for her, and the future of Catawba Swimming under first year Head Coach Matthew Gearing.
McRea Concludes NCAA Championship with Second All-American Honor
Indianapolis, Ind.- For the sixth time in his career, Micah McRea has earned All-American status during the NCAA Championship. McRea, in his fourth straight trip to Nationals, finished in eleventh place in the 400 IM on day three of the 2023 NCAA DII Swimming & Diving Championship in Indianapolis, Indiana for his fifth All-American honors. On the final day, McRea finished 10th in the 200 Breast for his sixth All-American honor in his career.
After being an alternate in the 100 Breast on day four, McRea finished the 200 Breast on the final day in 13th place to qualify for the finals on Saturday night. McRea finished the prelims with a time of 1:59.97. McRea then finished 10th in the finals later that night with a time of 1:59.36 to earn his sixth All-American status.
Being a six-time All-American, McRea is the most decorated swimmer in LR history.
