Carson-Newman's Compagner Named 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Carson-Newman's Manon Compagner has been named the 2023 South Atlantic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Year, the Conference office announced on Tuesday (March 28).
A senior from Balkbrug, Netherlands, Compagner became the first woman in the history of Carson-Newman's athletic department to lay claim to a national championship as she won the 100 Butterfly at the 2023 NCAA DII Swimming & Diving Championships with a time of 52.42. Compagner then secured her second national title of the meet in the 100 Freestyle, touching the wall first with a time of 48.97. Her time was good for a new school record as she broke the previous record not once but twice in the same day. Compagner also placed fifth in the 50 Freestyle (22.81), third in the 400 Medley Relay (3:41.57), and fifth in the 400 Freestyle relay (3:22.40). She left the national championships with five All-American performances.
Compagner earned three gold medals at the inaugural South Atlantic Conference Championships, contributing to the women's second-place finish. She won the 50 Freestyle with a time of 22.78, the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:49.11 and the 100 Butterfly with a time of 52.92. Compagner's times in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly were both good for NCAA A Cuts, giving her an automatic qualification to the national championships.
Compagner ended her senior season with 11 first-place individual finishes and found success against DI competition throughout the season. She placed second in the 100 Butterfly, third in the 200 Butterfly, and fourth in the 50 Freestyle against Georgia Tech and fourth in the 100 Freestyle and fifth in the 100 Butterfly against the University of Tennessee.
