Catawba's Reckmann Named 2024 South Atlantic Conference Women's Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Catawba's Marit Reckmann was voted the 2024 South Atlantic Conference Women's Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced Monday (March 18).
The South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one student-athlete in each of the Conference's championship sports and is voted on by the SAC's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee. The winners are selected based on their achievements in academics, athletics, service, and leadership.
Reckmann, a sophomore biology major, holds a 4.00 grade point average and is a Catawba College Dean's List honoree over her freshman and sophomore years. As a member of Catawba Women's Swimming, Reckmann has been recognized alongside her teammates as the team with the highest GPA in the country in Division II women's swimming. Catawba has earned the honor each semester that Reckmann has been a part of the program (Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Fall 2023).
The Nienhagen, Germany native was a three-time finalist at the South Atlantic Conference Championships this past year, finishing fifth in the 50 Freestyle (23.79), 100 Freestyle (51.20) and the 200 Freestyle (1:53.89). Additionally, Reckmann was a member of two third-place relays, claiming bronze in the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay. She broke the school record in the 50 and 100 Freestyle numerous times this season and was a member of the school-record-breaking 200 Freestyle Relay, 400 Freestyle Relay (twice), 200 Medley Relay (twice) and the 400 Medley Relay. Reckmann and her Catawba Indians squad made program history this year as the first-ever Catawba women's swim team to be ranked in the top 25 nationally, ranking as high as 22nd in the country during the 2023-24 season.
During her freshman season, Reckmann set new school records in the 100 Butterfly, 400 Medley Relay, 200 Medley relay, 200 Freestyle Relay and the 400 Freestyle relay. At the inaugural 2023 South Atlantic Conference Swimming Championships, she recorded a top finish of 7th in the 100 Butterfly (57.67) and added two 8th-place finishes in the 50 Freestyle (24.24) and 100 Freestyle (52.42), respectively.
Outside of the pool, Reckmann is an active member of the Catawba community. She recorded 32 hours of volunteering as Catawba contributed the second-most volunteering hours in NCAA Division II Women's Swimming.
