Wingate wins SAC Women’s Tennis Tournament championship over Anderson, 5-1
Morgan Winston earned Most Valuable Player honors as the Wingate Bulldogs won the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship with a 5-1 victory over the Anderson Trojans.
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Morgan Winston earned Most Valuable Player honors as the Wingate Bulldogs won the 2012 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship with a 5-1 victory over the Anderson Trojans.
Winston was an 8-4 winner with Kelli Ferguson at No. 3 doubles and then took a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
Wingate held a 2-1 lead after doubles, thanks to Winston and Ferguson in the third flight and an 8-4 win by Olivia Poole and Tiffany Williams at No. 2.
Anderson's Shelby Anderson and Camie Brunet took an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Winston cruised to a quick win to make it 3-1, and Becca Thomas' 6-3, 6-1 win in the second flight put Wingate one match away from a championship.
WU's Tiffany Williams won the first set 7-6 in a tiebreaker and then got the celebration started with a 6-3 second set.
With the tournament championship, the top-seeded Bulldogs earn the SAC's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
