Catawba Falls Just Short in Bid for National Title; Make Deepest Tennis Run in SAC Postseason History
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – The season came to a close for Catawba College on Saturday afternoon as the Indians fell to Nova Southeastern University, 4-0, in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Championship.
Catawba opened the match by claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 2, Sofia Antolini and Rin Igarashi defeated Noemie Dadoun and Chloe Henderson, 6-1, while Tina Gomes and Agata Budnik earned a 6-1 victory over Priscila Janikian and Jana Boegner at No. 3 doubles.
Nova Southeastern responded in singles play, taking straight-set victories at No. 1, No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to secure the national title.
At the top singles position, Kristyna Hranacova defeated Antolini 6-3, 6-3. Katja Markus followed with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Hanna Bougouffa at No. 2 singles. Dadoun earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Liliana Drukerova at No. 4, while Boegner clinched the championship with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Ekaterina Kldiashvili at No. 5.
Matches at No. 3 and No. 6 singles were left unfinished.
Catawba closes its historic season as the NCAA Division II national runner-up after making the deepest postseason run in program and conference history.
