Queens Captures 2021 SAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship
HICKORY, N.C. (TheSAC.com) – The Queens women won the 2021 South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships by a large margin with 228 points after the two-day event at the Irwin Belk Track, culminating on Saturday, April 25.
Queens won yet another outdoor track & field championship on the strength of 11 gold medalists and new records on the final day of competition. They also came away with three out of the four major awards, with Fatima Alanis earning Freshman of the Year. Alanis won the women's 10000 meters with a time of 36:13.37, she also won the women's 5000 meters with a time of 17:42.45. Field Athlete of the Meet went to multi competitor Elise Ulseth who placed first in the women's long jump with a mark of 6.05m, took the gold in the women's 100m hurdles with a time or 14:09 and went on to place first in the women's javelin with a throw of 43.67m. Jim Vahrenkamp, head coach for the Royals and Coach of the Year led his team to a total of 228 points on the weekend and multiple podium appearances from both the men's and women's teams.
Catawba's Samantha Payne and the Track Athlete of the Meet ran in the 4x400 relay anchoring her team to a first-place finish with a time of 3:56.41, she also competed in and won the women's 400 meters with a time of 56.03. Catawba women finished seventh overall with 58 points.
