Queens' Welsing Named South Atlantic Conference Women's Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) – Queens' Melanie Welsing has been named the 2021 South Atlantic Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced on Tuesday (June 15).
Welsing, a Junior from Richmond, KY., finished a remarkable season as the first athlete from the women's track & field team to win a National Championship since 2016 and she is just the third in program history. The All-American earned the title clocking a time of 13.43 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles which is a new program record. She also finished first in 100-meter hurdles at the SAC Championship meet, earning 24 points for Queens.
In addition to her National Championship title this season, she placed 1st in triple jump and 2nd in both the 100m hurdles and the 100m in the Hub-City Invitational. At the Mount Olive First Chance Meet she placed third overall in the women's Heptathlon.
The SAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year award is determined following the completion of the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championship and is voted on by the league's head coaches.
